Rieber & Søn is a family-owned Norwegian investment company with an industrial legacy dating back to 1839. We want to be a catalyst for renewal, while ensuring a common view of the way ahead.

We invest in a long-term perspective and seek to learn as much as we can about the companies and sectors where we invest. We respect and value the experience and know-how built and cultivated in the companies. On this basis, we serve as an active partner for management in developing the business, for the benefit of employees, owners and society at large.

Our headquarters

History

The Rieber family’s Norwegian story began with a dramatic shipwreck north of Bergen in 1817. The industrial legacy dates back to 1839.

The dramatic beginning

The emigrant ship «De Zee Ploeg», bound for America, is shipwrecked north of Bergen after being ravaged by a hurricane. Among the passengers are the Rieber family from Ebingen in Germany.

P.G. Rieber established

Paul Gottlieb Rieber, eight year’s old when «De Zee Ploeg» stranded, established the firm P.G. Rieber og opens trade and vinegar production.

An industry group emerges

The corporation is transformed from a trading company into a major industrial group. Sales volumes grow by a factor of five, as does the number of employees – from 292 to 1591.

Merger and stock exchange listing

The company is merged with building materials company Jacob Neumann and Nodest Industries. Following the merger, Rieber & Søn is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

Focus on food and beverage

Rieber & Søn abandons the conglomerate model to concentrate on food and beverages.

Orkla acquisition

Rieber & Søn is acquired by consumer goods company Orkla and later merged with Stabburet to form Orkla Foods Norway.

Investment company

Rieber & Søn brings its legacy into the future as an investment company aspiring to foster growth and renewal.

The board

Bjarne Rieber

Bjarne Rieber (born 1936) represents the owners on the board. He brings first-hand knowledge of the legacy of Rieber & Søn, which during his time as owner and executive was transformed from a trading company into a major industrial group.

Fritz Rieber

CEO

Fritz Rieber is a former partner at Borea, and has work experience from banking and finance. He has co-founded a number of companies and served member and chairman on the board of listed as well as non-listed companies.

Marianne Mangschou Rieber

Marianne Mangschou Rieber (born 1968) represents the owners on the board. She is the managing publisher of Mangschou Forlag, one of Norway’s most recognized publishers of books for children and young readers.

Helge Midttun

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Helge Midttun (born 1955) has extensive experience from board work as well as operational management. Of particular value to Rieber & Søn is his know-how within the seafood and marine sectors and the food and beverage industry. Midttun has been President and CEO of Aker BioMarine, Fjord Seafood and Det Norske Veritas (now DNV GL). Midttun serves on the board of international fish farming group Cermaq and various other companies.

Helge Midttun holds a master’s degree from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH).

Leif Teksum

Leif Teksum (born 1952) is one of Norway’s most experienced business leaders. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Yara and Nordic Trustee. To Rieber & Søn, Teksum brings well-rounded strategic and operational skills, built from his vantage position in the finance industry. Since 1991 he has been a member of group management in DNB, Norways’s leading bank, and has been in charge of large corporate clients in Norway and all international activities.

Teksum holds a master’s degree from The Norwegian School of Economics (NHH).

Katrine Trovik

Katrine works as an independent board member with core competencies in business development, business law, corporate governance and management. She has has work experience from the management group for DNB Corporate banking for more than 10 years. Katrine also has 10 years of practice as a business lawyer and partner in two of Norway’s largest law firms. In addition, Katrine has experience as a board member in listed companies, state-owned companies, technology companies, research foundations and non-profit organizations.

Katrine holds a master’s degree from The Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) and a law degree from the University of Bergen.

Fritz Rieber

CEO

Fritz Rieber is a former partner at Borea, and has work experience from banking and finance.

He has co-founded a number of companies and served member and chairman on the board of listed as well as non-listed companies.

Øystein Elgan

LAWYER /DIRECTOR

Øystein Elgan is a former lawyer and partner at law firms Greve & Lorentzen and Thommessen, and also has experience as a registrar. He serves on the board of a number of Norwegian and international companies as member or chairman. Elgan is a law graduate from the University of Bergen. 

Hilde Iren Huse

ANALYST

Hilde Iren Huse is responsible for analysis and follow-up related to securities and investments. Her previous work experience includes credit and stock analysis at Nordea and accounting at Deloitte.

Huse holds a master’s degree from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) and is an authorized financial analyst from NHH/NFF.

Trond Valvik

INVESTMENT DIRECTOR

Trond Valvik is in charge of the business area Direct Investments in Rieber & Søn. He was partner at PE firm Borea Opportunity and has experience from transaction support and accounting at EY. As board member and chairman in several companies, Valvik has built extensive cross-sector experience.

Valvik holds a master’s degree from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH).

Anders S. Engeset

INVESTMENT MANAGER

Anders is responsible for individual investments in the Rieber & Søn portfolio. He  has experience with transactions, analysis and follow-up related to the company’s direct investments and shipping portfolio.

Engeset holds a Master’s degree from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH), with specialisation in economic analysis.

Jørund H. Indrehus

DIRECTOR

Jørund is our in-house resource within accounting and tax area. He supports the financial and reporting structures and processes of change in existing portfolio companies. He is also leading our transaction support team in connection with acquisition and divestment of companies.

Jørund has been partner at EY, and has experience as consultant and auditor in various industries nationally and internationally.

Jørund is a business economics graduate of the Norwegian School of Economics with Master of Accountancy and CPA.

Administration

Sissel Vallestad


ACCOUNTS AND ADMINISTRATION

Sissel Vallestad has been employed in the company since 1990. She has previous work experience from the Olav Thon Group. Sissel has higher education in accounting and administration.

Laila Oppedal Strann


HEAD OF ACCOUNTING

Laila has been employed in the company since 1992. She has experience in accounting since 1980.  Her education includes courses in accounting, economics and tax at the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH).

Cathrine Monsen

CONTROLLER

Cathrine joined Rieber & Søn in 2018. She works as a controller within accounting and financial reporting. Monsen has experience in auditing in Deloitte Bergen. She is a state authorized public accountant with a master’s degree from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH).
